Field Classes and Journeys Abroad

The Academy of Fine Arts students have a unique opportunity to pursue their studies and attend specialized summer workshops in several locations throughout Croatia. These courses last for two to three weeks during which the students and teachers live and work as an artistic colony.

For instance, painters can work in the lush river-side scenery around Legrad, a picturesque town near the Hungarian border, where the river Mura empties into the Drava.
Another painting and ceramics workshop is in Samobor , a little town near Zagreb. Future printmakers can choose between Motovun and Vrbnik. Motovun is a small Istrian town with a long artistic tradition and unique architecture. In Vrbnik, the historic center of Croatian Glagolitic culture and printing craft on the island of Krk, students live and work in a 14th century mansion and find their inspiration in the incunabula printed in Vrbnik.
Students of sculpture have the alternative of spending two weeks at Montraker-Vrsar in Istria or Puèišæa on the island of Braè. Both of these towns boast ancient marble pits and a long tradition of stone-cutting. Finally, students of art education can join an international summer course, given in English, in the town of Starigrad on the island of Hvar. In addition to Croatian teachers, the lectures in Starigrad are given by invited foreign experts.
All these localities remarkably differ in climate, geographic features, architecture, local customs, folklore, cuisine, and even language.
During the courses, students and teachers make numerous trips to famous local sights, ranging from ancient Greek and Roman ruins to natural reserves of outstanding beauty.

Over the last couple of years, students have been provided with several foreign and domestic study tours. Typically, freshmen have visited the baroque castles of northern Croatia, sophomores Vienna, juniors have traveled to Prague or Vienna, and senior students to Egypt, London or Paris. Part of the travel and accommodation expenses were covered by the Croatian Ministry of Science and Technology, Zagreb Municipal Fund for Culture, and by sponsors with whom the Academy of Fine Arts has exceptionally good relations.
